Artist Statement ’12
My artwork reflects awareness of my relationship with the world—how I perceive the details of my surroundings, and how we interact with our shared spaces. I respond to my own environment with my artwork. I place my work in the public realm, drawing viewers into unexpected encounters. I challenge the viewers’ expectations of what they are seeing. Sometimes it’s all there for the taking and sometimes I hold back to reward curiosity. If the viewer is interested in searching then I’m interested in going the next step with them.
In my art practice, I do not aim for continuity in terms of media; one piece appears quite different from the next. Exploring the seemingly non-linear variety of these objects, I develop the unity of my ideas. I pursue a theoretical continuity based on an understanding of my own autonomy: to make projects that follow my own interests.
I create sculpture and installations with everyday industrial materials in order to engage people with objects they are familiar with. My interventions with these familiar objects, create interactive environments that are fraught with tension. Through pieces that require the viewer’s direct participation in potentially antagonistic experiences, I challenge everyone to think more about why things are the way they are. These challenges manifest themselves with questions of how we see art, how we interact with art, where art is “suppose” to be and what it is. I often reference art history and my art is about art itself.
